The Legacy of Spejbl and Hurvínek

Spejbl and Hurvínek, or /s-payble & hoor-vee-neck/, is a legendary Czech puppet comedy duo created by professor Josef Skupa. These characters have gained international acclaim, releasing numerous comedy albums and even starring in their own television show.

The duo’s tales often revolve around the dim-witted father, Josef Spejbl, and his lively son, Hurvínek, who live in the same apartment with another family. Alongside them are Ms. Kateřina and her daughter Mánička, not to mention their talking dog, Žeryk. Although aimed at children, the shows are filled with clever humor that appeals to adults as well.

A Cultural Phenomenon

Spejbl was the first puppet created by Skupa in 1920, representing a retrograde teacher struggling to keep up with the times. Hurvínek, his son, was introduced in 1926, embodying a mix of laziness and hyperactivity. Skupa expertly performed with both puppets, providing distinctive high-pitched voices.

His success led to the establishment of a dedicated theatre in 1930. Over time, the puppeteers expanded the stories, adding characters like Ms. Kateřina and Mánička with their dog Žeryk. These additions allowed for even more entertaining and bizarre adventures, securing their place in the hearts of children and adults alike.
