Commedia dell’arte; meaning “comedy of the profession” was an early form of professional theatre, originating from Italy, that was popular in Europe from the 16th to the 18th century. Commedia dell’arte was formerly called Italian comedy in English and is also known as commedia alla maschera, commedia improvviso, and commedia dell’arte all’improvviso. Commedia is a form of theatre characterized by masked “types” which began in Italy in the 16th century and was responsible for the advent of actresses and improvised performances based on sketches or scenarios.
Commedia dell’arte is based on solid, established characters and improvisation. There were character types that appeared in every performance (with slight variations). All the characters had their own mask, so the audience recognized them immediately. The actor often played the same character all his life. He had learned the appropriate lines and mastered the character. Before the performance, only a sort of outline of the plot (plot, ending) was agreed upon, which everyone followed, but the actual dialogue was the work of the actors on stage. The performance was therefore spontaneous and able to adapt flexibly to the particular reactions of the audience.
