Mischievous Little Čert (Chort)

I am a cheerful devil (Čert in my language) marionette with a deep affection for the human world, a place I find far more appealing than the dark and fiery realm of hell. Unlike the typical devil, I have no interest in frightening people or, heaven forbid, dragging them to the underworld. Instead, I aspire to forge friendships wherever I go. The underworld, with its intense heat and perpetual darkness, is not to my liking. I thrive in the world above, where I can play and interact with people, especially children. Children are the most delightful companions, with their boundless imaginations and captivating stories in which I am thrilled to take part.

In contrast to the stereotypical depiction of devils, I am a unique figure inspired by Čert from Czech and Slovak folklore. Čert is not merely an evil counterpart to the devil, although we share some similarities. In these tales, Čert serves as a subordinate to Lucifer, often occupying roles akin to a low-ranking laborer or assistant. He is typically portrayed as a hairy man with a tail, horns, and one or two hoofs. However, he is also capable of transforming his appearance, sometimes becoming a handsome young man, a noble count, or a skilled huntsman.

My approach is different. I delight in the art of persuasion, often attempting to tempt individuals into trading their souls for promises of wealth, power, or the completion of impossible tasks. These bargains, typically made with the greedy or wicked, seldom end well for them. Their stories frequently serve as cautionary tales about the perils of greed and ambition.

However, I am not always a cunning trickster. There are times when I become the one being tricked. In many tales, the hero outsmarts me, winning back their soul through wit and cleverness. As a result, I am often obliged to perform extraordinary deeds, such as constructing castle walls in a single day, digging vast fish ponds, moving enormous stones, or creating entire hills and mountains.

Sometimes, I assume a more positive role by escorting the truly evil characters to hell. In these instances, I often assist or befriend heroes, awarding them magical items and treasures as tokens of my support. At times, I align myself with common people, choosing to rebel and defy my former master, Lucifer.
